A statistical adaptive block-matching motion estimation

چکیده
In this paper, we address the problem of motion estimation (ME) in digital video sequences and propose a new fast, adaptive, and efficient block-matching algorithm. Higher quality and efficiency are achieved using a statistical model for the motion vectors. This model introduces adaptation in the search window, drastically reducing the number of positions where correlation-type computation is performed. The efficiency is further improved by progressively undersampling the macroblock. Patterns for undersampling are proposed to obtain the maximum benefit from single instruction multiple data (SIMD) instructions. In contrast with existing motion-estimation techniques, search strategy and subsampled patterns are closely linked. This shows that a good search strategy is much more important than blindly reducing the number of pixels considered for the matching pattern. We describe an implementation of the proposed matching strategy that exploits the very long instruction word (VLIW) and SIMD technology available in the new Itanium Processor Family. Results show that the proposed algorithm adapts easily to the evolution of the scene avoiding annoying quality drops that can be observed with other deterministic algorithms. The total number of operations required by the proposed method is inferior to those required by traditional approaches.

Adaptive search area for fast motion estimation
In this paper a new method for determining the search area for motion estimation algorithm based on block matching is suggested. In the proposed method the search area is adaptively found for each block of a frame. This search area is similar to that of the full search (FS) algorithm but smaller for most blocks of a frame. Therefore, the proposed algorithm is analogous to FS in terms of reg...
متن کاملNew adaptive interpolation schemes for efficient meshbased motion estimation
Motion estimation and compensation is an essential part of existing video coding systems. The mesh-based motion estimation (MME) produces smoother motion field, better subjective quality (free from blocking artifacts), and higher peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) in many cases, especially at low bitrate video communications, compared to the conventional block matching algorithm (BMA). Howev...
متن کاملA New Statistically Adaptive Block-Matching Criterion for Motion Estimation
In this paper, we address the issue of motion estimation in real video sequences. While the conventional block-matching criteria for motion estimation is based on the assumption that the average values of the target block and reference blocks are identical. This causes performance degradation for motion estimation because average values are time-varying in real video sequences. In order to alle...

An improved algorithm for fast motion estimation based on the block matching algorithm (BMA) is presented for use in a blockbased video coding system. To achieve enhanced motion estimation performance, we propose an adaptive search pattern length for each iteration for the current macro block (MB). In addition, search points that must be checked are determined by means of directional informatio...

Block matching motion estimation is the essence of video coding systems. Therefore, development of an efficient method for fast motion estimation is the basic requirement of the video encoder design. Block based motion estimation algorithms are used to reduce the memory requirements of any video file and also decrease computational complexity. We have been presented here some block matching alg...
